Easy Veggie Guide

1)
Start vegetable seeds or cuttings using our A-Ok or Mini-Block starters (refer to seeding guide) or buy a small plant from your local nursery.

2)
Which loose Grodan product- Growcubes or Granulate?
If planting outside or growing water loving veggies such as tomatoes, we recommend granulate. Growcubes can be used outside, but will require more watering.

3)
Soak your loose Grodan in a gallon of prepared plant food with a squeeze of lemon in it to adjust pH for hard water. Follow mixing directions on plant food container.

4)
If using a small plant in soil, gently wash off some of the soil before transplanting. But do this right before you are ready to transplant into your Grodan stonewool, so that the plant’s roots do not get dry.

5)
Take the Growcube or granulate prepared in step 3 and put in a container with good drainage. Flush to waste with more pH 5.5 solution. Transplant you seedling or the nursery plant into the the loose Grodan. If your seedling is growing in a Mini-block starter, make sure to remove the plastic wrapping around it before transplanting.

6)
Water with prepared plant food at around pH 5.5-6.5 (again a light squeeze of lemon to a gallon of water is a good rule of thumb, if you have hard tap water). As the plant gets bigger, you can increase the amount of plant food. Follow recommendations on the plant food in order to avoid burning the roots with too much food.

7)
If you are growing a veggie that flowers and sets fruit (e.g. tomato, peppers, cucumbers, etc.), then at blooming, you will need to switch from a grow type fertilizer (higher in nitrogen) to a bloom type (higher in phosphorous). Follow directions on plant food container.

8)
Keep an eye on pests. It is easier to control insects and diseases at the onset than when they get out of hand. Talk to your local garden center or hydroponic store about natural options for controlling pests. Visit naturescontrol.com for available natural controls.

How often to water?
Use the “kick-the-bucket” method. Lightly kick container, if it moves then it is time to water with more plant food. It is best to water in the morning (if inside, when grow lights are turned on); watering at night (dark) leads to diseases.
